Council worker injured when clearing illegally dumped waste

Published: Thursday, 16th February 2017

A Council worker from Cannock Chase Council`s Street Cleansing Team has been injured whilst removing illegally dumped waste from a fly tipping site near Norton Canes.

The load of approximately 2.5 tonnes of waste had been illegally dumped at the site from what appeared to have been a large van or lorry.

Due to its location, the site was partially cleared using a machine and the remainder was undertaken manually by the Council`s Street Cleansing Team.  Unfortunately, whilst work was underway one of the workers stumbled and broke a bone in his wrist.  Incidents such as this can be avoided if people dispose of their waste properly.

Fly tipping is on the rise nationally. In response to this, the Council`s Environmental Protection Team will be implementing additional measures across the District to prevent fly tipping and catch offenders.

The Council takes illegal fly tipping seriously and will prosecute those responsible. If caught, offenders can be issued with a £400 Fixed Penalty Notice; non-payment of the fixed penalty will result in prosecution for fly tipping.

Councillor John Preece, Cabinet Leader for the Environment, said “Fly tipping is completely unacceptable and a blight on all our communities across the country.  This type of blight even extends to anti-social behaviours such as; littering, dog fouling, parking on grass verges and leaving bins on streets after collection. The Council is not prepared to accept such behaviour within our District.

“I would urge everyone in the District to be the Council’s eyes and ears and to report any fly tipping to us.  We are determined to stamp out fly tipping, however, we do need the public’s help on this and with the right evidence we can secure a conviction.”

Anyone who witnesses fly tipping in the District is urged to report it to Cannock Chase Council by calling 01543 462621.  Key information needed is:

  • Date and time of the incident
  • The model, make, registration number and colour of the vehicle used
  • A description of the offender/offenders

It can also be reported online at www.cannockchasedc.gov.uk
