Cannock Chase Council’s Cabinet have approved a redevelopment scheme at the former Aelfgar School site in Rugeley.
The site, including Taylor’s Lane car park, will be redeveloped into 58 houses. Of the 58 houses built, 29 of them will be built to Future Homes Standards and available to rent from the Council.
Council homes for rent would comprise of; 17 x 2-bedroom houses, 10 x 3-bedroom houses and 2x 4-bedroom houses.
Councillor Adrienne Fitzgerald, Portfolio Leader for Housing, Heritage, and Leisure said “I am delighted that Cabinet have agreed this scheme. Affordable housing is in high demand across Cannock Chase, with approximately 1,300 households currently on the list for Council housing and it’s our priority to improve the housing offer across the District.
“These are the first houses to be built to Future Homes Standard, which will incorporate new technologies including; air source heat pumps, solar panels, electric car chargers and high levels of insulation to achieve the high energy efficiency ratings in the standard. This will help to improve the carbon footprint of the District.”
It is proposed that the Council’s HRA Capital Programme will finance the provision of the 29 (50%) affordable Council homes and a development partner be appointed to undertake construction of the Council’s 29 homes for rent and provide 29 (50%) homes for outright sale.
The car park at Taylor’s Lane will close in Spring 2023.
Subject to planning permission, the initial works will start on site in July 2023 and all 58 homes should be delivered by May 2025.
