Outdoor markets in Cannock and Rugeley are set to re-open this month, following updated advice from the government.

Rugeley Outdoor Market managed by Darren Clapham will re-open this Tuesday (2 June).  All traders have been briefed, there will be signs displaying social distancing measures, hand sanitizer will be available and all hard surfaces will be sanitized regularly.

Cannock Street Market operated by Sketts, will also open earlier than originally anticipated on Friday 19 June, following adequate risk assessments and plan for a new layout.

A representative for Sketts said “We are excited to be able to re-open Cannock Street Market. There will be over 20 traders back including fruit & veg, baked goods & household essentials but please note there will be a revised market layout to ensure the safety of all and 2-metre distancing is being applied. It is also important to support your local businesses more than normal at these times.”

Councillor Gordon Alcott, Portfolio Leader for Town Centre Regeneration said “A lot of planning has been put into the re-opening of the outdoor markets in the District, to ensure that the appropriate social distancing measures are in place and that all operators are following government guidance.

“We would remind visitors that everyone needs to observe the measures being put in place, otherwise there is a risk that the markets could be closed down again.

“The Council is currently planning to introduce wider social distancing measures in the town centres in time for the re-opening of non essential shops from 15 June, in conjunction with Staffordshire County Council as the highways authority, and further details will be announced in due course.”

Cannock Indoor and Rugeley Indoor Market Halls are working towards opening week commencing 15 June, once risk assessments are complete and appropriate signage is in place.
