Cannock Chase Council and Staffordshire Police have received a number of reports about social gatherings that have taken place in local streets over the Easter weekend.
The Council and local police are politely reminding residents that they cannot socialise with friends or relatives who do not live in the same household. This includes not meeting others, including neighbours outside, unless strict social distancing measures are followed.
The Council’s Community Safety Partnership has strong links with Staffordshire Police and has been working closely together to monitor the situation. The police have powers to issue fines to individuals if these rules are broken, under the Coronavirus Act 2020.
In addition, Council tenants are also being advised that they could be at risk of breaching their tenancy agreements if they don’t follow the guidance.
Carl Bennett, Leader of Crime and Partnerships for Cannock Chase Council, said: “With the nice weather continuing and another bank holiday coming up in a few weeks, everyone must obey the current government guidance on social distancing until further notice. The majority of local people are adhering to this guidance and safely staying at home, however there are a few who are not.
“Please help to reduce the spread of Coronavirus and follow the rules set out by government and save lives”.
Becky Hyde, Chief Inspector for Staffordshire Police, said: “I would encourage everyone to enjoy themselves at home with their loved ones and only socialise with those people that live in your household.
“Your local police will be working to ensure social distancing measures are adhered to. We will be engaging, explaining and encouraging – enforcement is a last resort”
“By communities working together to stop the spread of Covid-19, we will collectively save lives and protect our NHS”.
The Council is working with its partners including local police, public health specialists at Staffordshire County Council and Public Health England to monitor and respond to the coronavirus situation. To find out more visit www.cannockchasedc.gov.uk/coronavirus
