Cannock Chase Council today warmly welcomed the announcement that Birmingham’s bid to stage the 2022 Commonwealth Games has been successful.
The Games, first staged in 1930 and now held on a four yearly basis, is a unique, world-class multi-sports event with competitions including athletics, swimming, cycling, boxing and many more sports.
Councillor George Adamson, Leader of Cannock Chase Council, said “Cannock Chase Council has been a strong supporter of the Commonwealth Games 2022 bid and we are really pleased the Games are coming to the West Midlands. In particular, it is likely that the mountain bike events will be held on Cannock Chase and so we will be part of the Games.”
Managing Director of the Council, Tony McGovern, said “This is fantastic news and I want to congratulate Birmingham City Council for developing the West Midlands based bid. The Commonwealth Games will bring millions of visitors and economic benefits for the whole region.”
The Commonwealth Games Federation announced the host city for the 2022 edition this morning at Arena Academy School in Perry Barr, Birmingham. Shortly afterwards the Department for Culture, Media and Sport welcomed the confirmation of Birmingham’s success.
Birmingham’s bid includes event locations across the West Midlands region, and has received the full support of organisations throughout the wider Midlands region, including: Birmingham City Council; three regional local enterprise partnerships; the West Midlands Combined Authority and the elected Mayor of West Midlands; the West Midlands Growth Company; and the Midlands Engine. In addition, Birmingham’s bid is supported by The Birmingham Commonwealth Association.
