Cannock Chase Council in conjunction with its partner Biffa Municipal Ltd is launching their contamination campaign this week, warning residents if they put the wrong item in the blue bin, it won’t get emptied.
This campaign has been launched following a marked increased in the number of loads being rejected at the Council’s materials recycling facility as they contained unacceptable items/materials.
The Council is focusing on key items which have been regularly found in rejected loads of dry recycling; these are:
- Nappies
- Animal Bedding
- Black Refuse Sacks
- Food Waste
- Paints Pots
Since April 2015, the Council has seen an ongoing increase in contaminated loads, this equates to hundreds of tonnes of materials that could not be recycled correctly.
Councillor John Preece, Environment Portfolio Leader said “The Council can only accept items in the blue recycling bin that can be sorted by the recycling facility that we use.
We are aware that recycling can be confusing for some people, however, we would ask residents to only put the items/materials that are specified in the waste and recycling calendar into the blue recycling bin.”
The contamination campaign message will be displayed throughout the District in the form of newspaper adverts, bus advertising and vehicle vinyls. Campaign messages and information will be posted on social media and our website.
During September warning tags will be issued to residents if black refuse sacks are found in the blue bin, with a warning that all items should be loose and not in bags.
From October if black bags are found in the blue bin, it will be tagged and not emptied and residents will be responsible for removing the items. The bin will then be collected on the next scheduled dry recycling collection day, two weeks later, the Council’s contractor will not return before that date.
