Children at Chadsmoor CE (VR) Junior School have received a Good Junior Citizen Award following their participation in a poster competition, aimed at highlighting the problem of dog fouling in the area.
The competition was run in conjunction with Community Spirit, a local group established to raise concerns of residents that had also identified dog fouling as a particular issue. Dr. Tom Preston, Chair of Community Spirit presented the winners with their Good Junior Citizen Certificates.
The posters were judged by officers in the Council’s Environmental Health Department who were so impressed with the children’s artwork that arrangements were made to add the winning posters to the Council’s banners that promote ‘Responsible Dog Ownership’ and will be displayed throughout the District.
The four winners of the competition also received a gift voucher and goody bag for their pictures.
Councillor John Preece, Environment Portfolio Leader said “The Council takes dog fouling very seriously and dog owners who are caught failing to pick up after their dog has fouled can expect to be issued with a £75 Fixed Penalty Notice, which if unpaid could lead to a significantly higher fine when the case goes to Court.
The Council are happy to work with schools and other organisations to help raise the profile of dog fouling, as well as acknowledging the benefits of promoting and recognising responsible behaviour by our young people.”
The Council are currently inviting nominations from residents for two award schemes, the Junior Good Citizen Award, (up to Year 6) and he Environmental Citizen Award (Year 7 and above).
