Work starting on MUGA at Pye Green Stadium site

Published: Thursday, 11th February 2016

Work has started this week on the multi-use games area (MUGA) at the Pye Green Stadium Site.

The MUGA is currently in a very poor condition and not fit for use.  The development and refurbishment of the site will enable children between 11-16 years old to play recreational football, netball, basketball and cricket in a purpose built floodlit area.

The design elements of the MUGA were chosen following a consultation in December last year with local schools, including Hednesford Valley High and Staffordshire University Academy, who chose elements such as the skills panels and the colours.

At the same time the damaged equipment on the new play area will be replaced.

In addition to floodlighting CCTV will be installed as a security measure following the recent arson attacks.

Councillor Christine Mitchell, Portfolio Leader for Culture and Sport said “This is the next stage in the exciting development of the stadium site.  The play area for toddlers and juniors was developed last year; the MUGA is for older children and a great addition to the site.

It was upsetting that the play area was a target for arson last year.  The Council has paid a lot of money to replace the damaged equipment which is being replaced as part of the MUGA works.

The Council has also gone to the expense of installing CCTV in this area to ensure that nothing like that happens again.

When the full development is complete at the old Cannock Stadium site, residents will have a site to be proud of and I hope they look after it and enjoy it for a long time to come.”

Following completion of this phase of the works contractors will be secured to commence works which include; car parking, additional CCTV, walkways, cycle trails, allotments, adventure play area and green gym equipment during 2016/17.

The works on the MUGA and replacement equipment will be complete in March 2016.
