Cannock Chase Council is calling on tenants and leaseholders to take an active role in shaping the future of housing in the district by joining its newly created Housing Board.
This initiative seeks to bring tenant and leaseholder voices directly into the Council’s decision-making process, ensuring that policies and strategies reflect the real experiences and needs of Cannock Chase residents.
The Housing Board is being launched in response to new regulations and a growing commitment by Cannock Chase Council to improve transparency and community engagement in housing matters. With three elected Councillors, three independent members, and three housing tenants or leaseholders from Cannock Chase Council, the Board will work collaboratively to oversee housing service delivery and policy development, reflecting a broad spectrum of expertise and experiences.
The Council is particularly interested in bringing tenants and leaseholders onto the Board to ensure their perspectives are considered. This approach highlights a renewed emphasis on understanding and addressing the lived experiences of residents as part of the Council’s responsibilities, especially following new legislation that mandates council inspections by an external social housing regulator.
Councillor Sue Thornley, Housing and Corporate Assets Portfolio Leader said: “Tenant and leaseholder participation has always been valued, but this new Board represents a shift in our approach. By embedding resident voices directly into our housing governance, we are committed to building stronger, more responsive housing services that truly reflect the needs of our community.”
