Cannock Chase Council Backs Gas Safety Week

Gas Safety Week

Published: Monday, 8th September 2025

Cannock Chase Council has pledged its support for Gas Safety Week (8–14 September 2025) and will be sharing important advice with council tenants and residents to raise awareness about the importance of gas safety.

Gas Safety Week brings organisations across the UK together to highlight the dangers of poorly maintained or badly fitted gas appliances, which can cause leaks, fires, explosions, and carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning. To keep your home safe and your appliances working efficiently, it’s vital they are checked every year by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

This year’s theme is ‘Looking after your home, friends, family’, reminding us all to play our part in keeping one another safe – whether that’s through advice, support, or making sure annual safety checks are carried out.

Councillor Sue Thornley, Portfolio Leader for Housing and Corporate Assets at Cannock Chase Council, said: “We are proud to support Gas Safety Week and share these important messages with our tenants. Gas safety is a vital part of keeping homes safe, and we want all our tenants to feel confident that their appliances are regularly checked and properly maintained.”

Rob Denman, Director of Gas Services at Gas Safe Register, said: “This is the fifteenth Gas Safety Week and the 2025 theme ‘Looking after your home, friends and family’ centres around the desire for us all to keep those we care for safe. Each Gas Safety Week, our partners, stakeholders and Gas Safe Register share information to help everyone be gas safe and I’m thrilled Cannock Chase Council is helping to share the message and the importance of ensuring everyone only uses an engineer that is registered and qualified.”

Gas Safety Tips for Council Tenants
•    Annual check: All council homes receive a free annual gas safety check arranged by the Council. Tenants must allow access for this appointment to keep their home safe.
•    Use registered engineers only: If you ever need gas work carried out, always make sure the engineer is Gas Safe registered.
•    Watch for warning signs: Yellow/orange flames, black marks on appliances, pilot lights that keep going out, or excessive condensation may mean something is wrong.
•    Keep vents and flues clear: Never block them – they keep your appliances safe.
•    Know the signs of CO poisoning: Headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, collapse, and loss of consciousness.
•    Install and test a CO alarm: Make sure it works and is marked to standard EN50291.
•    Never DIY gas work: Always call a registered engineer if you suspect a problem.

Gas Safe Register is the official body for qualified gas engineers in the UK. Visit www.GasSafeRegister.co.uk to find out more.
