Cannock Chase Council is calling on local children and young people to get creative this summer by helping to name its brand-new fleet of food waste collection wagons.
Open to children aged 16 and under, the competition invites young residents to come up with creative and memorable names for the six new wagons. Each winning name will be proudly displayed on the vehicle as it travels across Cannock Chase, giving winners a lasting sense of pride in their contribution.
Food waste collections began in the district at the end of April and have already proven a great success, with residents recycling more than 300 tonnes in the first four weeks alone — the equivalent weight of two blue whales. Figures have also shown that this service has reduced the waste in the general bin.
The competition forms part of the Council’s wider efforts to raise awareness of food waste and encourage positive recycling habits. By engaging school children and families, the initiative aims to spark conversations about sustainability both at home and in the classroom, helping to build long-term behavioural change across our community.
Councillor John Parkes, Portfolio Leader for Operational Services and Parks said: “Food waste collections have already made a fantastic start across the district and I want to personally thank residents for their participation.
“This competition is a fantastic way to inspire creativity while helping children understand the importance of reducing waste and protecting our environment. I’m really looking forward to seeing the imaginative names they come up with and giving them the opportunity to play a part in this important service.”
Children 16 and under have until 11 September to submit their entries. The final six winning names will be chosen by the Council’s Cabinet Lead, the Waste & Recycling team, and a representative from Biffa.
Each winning child will receive a prize, kindly provided by Biffa, including:
• A certificate and eco-themed goody bag
• A photo opportunity with their newly named wagon
The winning names will be professionally displayed on the wagons from October 2026 ensuring they are seen by residents across the district for years to come.
Tony Darbyshire, Senior Business Manager at Biffa, said: “At Biffa, we’re proud to support initiatives that engage local communities and encourage positive environmental habits. This competition is a great way to get young people involved and excited about recycling, and we’re delighted to provide prizes for the winners. We can’t wait to see these wagons out on the road with their new names.”
The winning names will also feature in the Binworld performances in October, as well as on the Council’s website and social media channels, with photo opportunities planned during the autumn term.
Children 16 and under can submit their entries by emailing communications@cannockchasedc.gov.uk by Friday 11 September.
