Air quality continues to improve in Cannock Chase

Air Quality

Published: Tuesday, 18th March 2025

Cannock Chase Council has made significant efforts towards improving local air quality, as shown in its 2024 Annual Status Report, which was presented to the Council’s Cabinet last week.

The report, approved by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) in September 2024, outlines the latest monitoring data and air quality initiatives taken to enhance the health and well-being of residents in Cannock Chase.

The report highlights 2023’s air quality monitoring results and an update on actions aimed at reducing harmful emissions in the area. In particular, the report focuses on improvements seen in the Watling Street area, which previously had been designated as an Air Quality Management Area (AQMA).

In May 2023, two AQMAs—Watling Street in Cannock and Fiveways in Heath Hayes were successfully revoked due to improved air quality. Monitoring data from the remaining AQMA, located in Watling Street, Norton Canes (AQMA 2), shows that this AQMA is ready to be lifted.

Councillor Lisa Wilson, Portfolio Leader for Environment and Climate Change, said:
“I am pleased to present this positive report to Cabinet.  Improving local air quality is essential for the health and well-being of our residents. We are proud of the progress we’ve made so far and are committed to taking further actions to ensure that our residents benefit from cleaner, healthier air.”

The report also emphasises the Council’s commitment to addressing the long-term challenges of air pollution, which have been linked to serious health concerns, including respiratory and cardiovascular diseases. The report highlights measures implemented in 2023, such as the introduction of a new Taxi Licensing Policy, aimed at phasing out petrol and diesel vehicles in favour of electric and hybrid alternatives.

The Council will continue to monitor air quality across the district and develop further initiatives to improve environmental awareness and air quality management.
