Cannock Chase Council has implemented a Public Spaces Protection Order (Alcohol Restriction Zones) across the District.

The new PSPO came into force on 1 February 2022 and will last for up to 3 years, it covers the following areas:

Cannock Town Centre and Cannock Park

Hednesford Town Centre and Hednesford Park

Rugeley Town Centre

Fernwood area

Ravenhill Park

The PSPO will enable Police Officers and Police Community Support Officers to request a person stops drinking alcohol and/or surrenders their drink if they are causing, or are likely to cause, alcohol related anti-social behaviour or disorder. It is not a total ban on drinking alcohol within these areas and the powers are not intended to disrupt peaceful activities.

Councillor Bryan Jones, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Leader for Neighbourhood Safety and Partnerships said “I am pleased that the alcohol restriction zones have been re-introduced.  They will help to reduce anti-social behaviour, crime and disorder in these locations and stop any situations escalating further.  It will also help to protect vulnerable individuals.  Signs will be going up in the areas above to inform people of the new restrictions.”

Inspector Christopher Moss from Cannock Neighbourhood Policing Team said “The new PSPO will provide local officers with the power to tackle street drinking that causes anti-social behaviour and crime, which we are working with colleagues at Cannock Chase Council to reduce. We want to encourage safe and sensible alcohol use and provide a pleasant environment for those who visit public spaces to enjoy themselves. Officers will deal with breaches of the PSPO in a way that promotes these aims. I welcome CCDC’s decision to grant this order and look forward to working together on its implementation.”

A person who fails without reasonable excuse to comply with a requirement imposed and commits an offence, can be issued with a fixed penalty of £100.00, or if later convicted by a court to a fine of up to £500.00.

The alcohol restrictions do not apply if within the curtilage of a licensed premises (i.e., a licensed bar, restaurant, shop, off license or marquee licensed with a Temporary Events Notice, as a one-off event).
