Campaign launched to address damp and mould in District’s private homes

Damp and Mould campaign

Cannock Chase Council’s Housing Standards Team are launching a campaign to address damp and mould issues in privately rented and owner-occupied homes across the District.

Everyone has the right to a warm, secure home, yet many people in England are living in a home with damp and mould which may put their physical and mental health at risk.

This campaign will focus on four wards, which have been identified as having a high level of need, these are Cannock North, Cannock East, Rawnsley and Western Springs which combined have a population of 25,900 residents, or 26% of the District’s total.

The team will identify occupiers living with damp and mould within the private rented sector and work with landlords to address these hazards.  We will also encourage homeowners to come forward with concerns they may have, and work with partner agencies to increase awareness of these issues (particularly amongst those working with under 5s and over 75s) to enable signposting and referrals to the Housing Standards Team.

Councillor Lisa Wilson, Portfolio Leader for Environment and Climate Change said “The miserable weather we are having this summer means that condensation is still a problem.  Condensation is the biggest cause of damp and mould in the home and this campaign will explain what causes condensation and how to reduce it.  The project will include a social media campaign giving lots of tips and advice to our residents and there is also lots of information on our website.”

If you feel that you need further advice regarding damp and mould or you are aware of anyone affected by damp and mould and would like to discuss the matter further, please contact the team at privatesectorhousing@cannockchasedc.gov.uk or call 01543 462621.
