Cannock Chase Council’s Cabinet have agreed to gift seven commemorative legacy beacons to recipients in previously agreed Welcome Back Funded high street, town centres locations across the District.

The beacons were paid for predominately by the Welcome Back Fund and cost circa £2,950 each.  It was envisaged that the beacons could be used as a focal point for future events in the various town centres across the district.  The first major event was the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.  All areas that were eligible for the Welcome Back Funding received a beacon, these are Cannock, Rugeley, Hednesford, Norton Canes, Bridgtown, Chadsmoor and Heath Hayes and Wimblebury.  The beacons have been delivered to 6 of the areas except for Cannock, which is held in storage until a recipient is in position to sign the Deed of Gift and take delivery of the Beacon.

The Deed of Gift Agreement will transfer and assign all legal rights to the town/parish councils or other local legal entity, which includes full responsibility for storage and use at any future events.

Councillor Mike Sutherland, Portfolio Leader for District and High Street Development said “The beacons were designed and commissioned locally and act as a legacy item to be lit on commemorative occasions for the benefit of our local communities, it was great to see many shining a bright light as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in June.  I hope to see many more occasions where the Beacons can be used for years to come.”
