Cannock Chase Council is calling on residents of the Pear Tree Estate in Rugeley, to join forces and become part of an exciting initiative, that will support improvements to Flaxley Road Play Area in Rugeley.
The Council are looking for volunteers who are local and are passionate about the area and protecting the park, to set up a Friends of Flaxley Park group.
Successful Friends of Groups have already been set up at Hednesford Park, Cannock Stadium Park, Heath Hayes Park and Cannock Park and they all play a vital role in nurturing community spirit, reducing anti-social behaviour (ASB) and ensuring that the park remains a safe and attractive space for everyone to enjoy and help to sustain their parks for many years to come.
A report to the Council’s Cabinet this August will be asking for permission to spend Section 106 funding of £141,764, to repair the small park, some of which is 27 years old.
The proposed redevelopment of Flaxley Road Play Area is set to be financed through Section 106 funding received from the developers following the residential development on Land at Pye Green Valley site.
A key motivation behind this initiative is the ongoing issue of anti-social behaviour (ASB) and vandalism in local parks across the district. Instances of damage not only reduce the enjoyment of the parks for everyone but also lead to unexpected repair costs and increased maintenance costs.
By involving the community directly through a ‘Friends of Flaxley Park’ group, the Council hopes to foster greater respect and care for the park, thereby reducing the occurrence of such issues. A strong community presence can act as a deterrent to ASB, helping to ensure that Flaxley Road Play Area remains a safe and welcoming environment for all.
Councillor John Preece, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Leader for Parks, Heritage and Culture said “I’m really pleased to hear that we have proposals in the pipeline to give this well-loved park a new lease of life.
“We know so many of our residents really care for their community and will be excited by this news. Our parks friends of groups have been integral to the success of award-winning parks across Cannock Chase and we believe that the establishment of a ‘Friends of’ group for Flaxley Road park will bring many benefits to the local community.”
The planned improvements for Flaxley Road Play Area are part of the Council’s ongoing commitment to enhancing parks and open spaces throughout the district. The Council recognises the value of these spaces for physical activity, mental well-being, and community cohesion, and is keen to ensure that Flaxley Road Play Area continues to serve the needs of local residents.
Residents who are interested in joining the ‘Friends of Flaxley Park’ group are encouraged to get in touch with Lynn Evans, Community Officer Parks and Open Spaces via email, lynnevans@cannockchasedc.gov.uk.
