Council’s waste and recycling reminders

Cannock Chase Council is reminding residents that its new chargeable garden waste collection service starts this month, with annual subscriptions covering from 1 January to 31 December 2024 at a cost of £38.50 per brown bin.

Residents can sign up at any time, but if they want to have their brown bins collected in January, they will need to sign up by 14 January. However, residents can still sign up at any time throughout the year at the same price.

So far, over 9,000 garden waste permits have been purchased from households within the Cannock Chase district, which is 50% of the expected number.

Full details on garden waste collections and how to subscribe to the service can be found on the homepage of the Council’s website.

Councillor Andrea Muckley, Portfolio Leader for Environment and Climate Change, said: “While it’s not a charge we wanted to impose on our residents but one which had become necessary to help balance our budget, it is pleasing to see so many residents subscribing to the service since we launched it last month.

“Garden waste collections are clearly valued and this level of support will ensure we are able to continue providing this service.”

On another waste related matter, annual waste and recycling collection calendars are no longer being printed and distributed to households, as part of another saving councillors agreed to make. However, they are available to download, also via the homepage of the Council’s website.

As Councillor Muckley explains: “Each week different bins are emptied across the district; some blue bags and bins are emptied with your green bin, and some are emptied with your brown bin.

“This means that each day of the week has two collection calendars, so please ensure that you download the correct collection calendar for the bins that you normally have collected on your normal day.

“And please note that we have not changed the days any of our bins get emptied during this year ahead, we only usually ever change the collection days over the Christmas period.”

A handy postcode checker on the waste and recycling section of the Council’s website at www.cannockchasedc.gov.uk enables residents to check or confirm their collection day. The same pages include a section on `Garden Waste`.
