The deferred tree felling in the tree avenue, Hednesford Park has now been agreed and will start next week.
The trees that have been selected for removal are 14 poplars, 1 lime and 1 sycamore. This is essential management and part of the ongoing improvement works part funded through the Heritage Lottery Grant for Hednesford Park. The space will enable the main avenue trees to develop and fill out.
Some of the trees removed from the tree avenue will be pollarded and turned into living sculptures. A consultation exercise with local schools will determine the type of images that the wood carver will create. The wood chippings from the branches of the felled trees will be re-used in the park as mulch materials for the woodland paths.
Councillor Christine Mitchell, Portfolio Leader for Culture and Sport said “At least half of the trees in the avenue were planted to help the main avenue trees to become established, with a view to them being removed a long time ago. Unfortunately this never happened and the trees are now well past their best and stunting the growth of the main avenue trees.
The original design of the park was to have a complete tree avenue around the park including the Victoria Street side and I am delighted that we have now completed that original design as part of the HLF Project.
This work is simply the next phase of good tree avenue management and the public will soon be able to see the artist at work creating some beautiful carvings.”
