The leader of Cannock Chase Council has been holding talks with major developers around plans for the centre of the town.
Work is well underway to demolish the eyesore multi storey car park - following the demolition of three former retail units in Cannock Shopping Centre. The subway from the town’s Beecroft Road car park is being filled in to be replaced with a new pedestrian crossing as part of the Northern Gateway improvements to the town centre which also include a new two storey café building.
The council has also purchased the Forum shopping centre along with several units on Church Street, Market Hall Street, and Market Place, as part of the second phase of the town centre redevelopment.
Funding for the scheme has been supported by £20 million government money following a successful bid by the district council.
The demolition of the car park and three former retail units are preparing the groundwork for new development - and the leader, Councillor Tony Johnson, said investors were impressed with what was happening in the town centre.
Councillor Johnson continued: “It was great to hear the huge interest from major developers who were keen to find out more about the opportunities for the town centre.
“They were impressed with the work we were carrying out to pave the way for new development to revitalise our town - and we are now looking forward to them coming to Cannock to see this work, and those opportunities, for themselves.”
The leader said face to face talks with interested parties were very positive and was able to take them through a new ’Investment Prospectus’ for Cannock town centre which provides information specifically targeted at potential developers.
He added: “It is clear that what we are doing in Cannock is now firmly on the radar of national companies and developers - and I am very pleased to be talking up our wonderful town and the future potential that will improve the offer for residents, businesses, visitors, and attract further investment.”
Improvements to the Beecroft Road Car Park and public spaces are also being delivered as part of the overall project.
Councillor Johnson and senior council officers met with investors at a national property conference last month.
