Families are invited to step into the world of local poet Nancy Foster with the launch of the Nancy Foster Walk in Hednesford. This unique trail offers the perfect opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors, get some fresh air, and learn more about the area’s literary heritage during this October half term.

Starting and finishing at the Museum of Cannock Chase, this scenic trail through Hednesford celebrates the life and literary contributions of Nancy Foster - a beloved local poet whose words captured the spirit of Cannock Chase and the heart of the Hednesford community.

The walk celebrates Nancy Foster’s talent for poetry, with 8 QR codes scattered along the route that share snippets of her life and work. Each stop unlocks a piece of history and creativity, encouraging visitors to connect with the places that inspired Nancy’s work and see Cannock Chase through her eyes. Each poem collected has been voiced by Staffordshire Poet Laureate Scarlett Ward, adding a unique and vibrant voice to Nancy’s legacy.

Once all 8 QR codes have been collected, visitors can claim a free prize related to Nancy Foster from the Museum of Cannock Chase.

Councillor John Preece, Leader for Leisure, Culture and Heritage, said: "Nancy Foster’s poetry offers a wonderful glimpse into our local heritage, and this trail provides an exciting way for families to experience it firsthand. I encourage everyone to explore the route, enjoy the beautiful surroundings, and immerse themselves in Nancy’s creative world this half-term.

This project not only honours her creative work but also encourages residents to engage with nature and their wellbeing.”

Rachel Gentle, Visitor Services Officer at The Museum of Cannock Chase, said: “The museum has long been an advocate for the work of Nancy Foster, holding original copies of her books and a dedicated interpretation panel in our local history gallery. We are delighted that her words and wonder about the local people and area that she so admired will be reaching new audiences.  Her poems resonate with pride of place, remembrance and imagination that capture local history.  For the first time in 90 years, her complete works are being reprinted by the museum in a replica memorial book to be enjoyed once more.”

This trail forms part of the Cannock Chase Can health and wellbeing programme and has been developed in partnership with Cannock Chase Council, Inspiring Healthy Lifestyles, and the Museum of Cannock Chase. In January, the museum will host a Nancy Foster Art Exhibition, featuring work by adult learners from South Staffordshire College, whose creativity has inspired this local walk.
