Bike marking

Cannock Chase Council and Cannock Police are re-launching popular bike marking events, to help prevent them being stolen.

The events, which have been arranged in partnership with the Council’s Community Safety Team and Cannock Chase Local Policing Team, will give bike owners the opportunity to have their bikes uniquely ‘marked’ and registered for free on the National Bike Register Scheme.

Bike marking acts as a highly effective visual deterrent, making bikes less appealing to thieves and increasing the likelihood of recovery if stolen. Attendees will also receive practical crime prevention advice on the day.

The events will take place on Saturday 19 July, and no booking is needed:

Cannock Town Centre, 12pm - 1pm - by bandstand

Hednesford Town Centre, 1:30pm - 2:30pm - Tesco Car Park adjacent to the recycling point

Rugeley Town Centre, 3pm - 4pm - Market Square

Anna Nevin, Head of Wellbeing said: “For many cyclists, their bike is not just a means of transport but something they’ve invested in and value highly, so having it stolen can be incredibly upsetting.

“With the growing popularity of cycling across the district, unfortunately, opportunities for theft also increase. These bike-marking events are a great way to deter thieves and protect your bike. I encourage everyone to come along, make use of the free security marking, and take advantage of the crime prevention advice on offer."

Chief Inspector Alan Lyford, Commander for Cannock Local Policing Team, said Chief Inspector Al Lyford, from the Cannock local policing team, said: “Burglary, theft and robbery can have a profound impact on people and businesses in Staffordshire.

“Cannock Chase in particular is a popular spot for cyclists and mountain bikers, with many investing lots of their money and time in bikes that are irreplaceable to them.

“In initiatives like this, we’re working collectively with local partners to better protect these bikes and to help deter crime in our communities.”
