Year 1 students from South Staffordshire College, studying Countryside and Conservation supported two projects at Hednesford War Memorial in December last year.

This followed funding from Southern Staffordshire Community Energy Fund, to install a water supply pipe up to the top of Hednesford War Memorial.  This will provide the area with permanent water for irrigating the plants, this funding was secured by Hednesford Lions.

The volunteer students back filled the trench containing the completed pipework and planted lavender plants in the formal beds.

Through funding from Hednesford Town Council Community Fund, given to The Friends of Hednesford Park, they purchased plug plants at the beginning of the year and various volunteer groups have helped to nurture the plugs into mature plants.

Councillor Adrienne Fitzgerald, Portfolio Leader for Housing, Heritage and Leisure said “This landscaping and conservation project has been successful with thanks to the collaboration of various groups.

“As part of the HLF Hednesford Park project, The Friends of Hednesford Park have developed a more environmentally friendly way of supporting flowering plant displays/shrubs at the War Memorial grounds, by using propagation through collecting seeds and taking cuttings from existing plants.

“As well as this, thanks to the funding received, the District Council will have a more sustainable way to keep the plants watered in dry periods and prevent the future loss of any plants.”

Shaun Middleton, President of Hednesford Centennial Lions Club said “Hednesford Centennial lions Club are proud to be delivering projects and initiatives to support Hednesford War Memorial and Gardens. We are so grateful to the students of South Staffordshire Collage for their help with our water supply project. The connection of a permanent water supply will enable us to clean and maintain the Monument and surrounding pathways as well as aiding in the care of the ongoing planting programs.”
