During May residents in the District will be issued with a new ‘which bin guide’ sticker on their green (general waste) bin.
The sticker will be placed on the bin lid and its aim is to remind residents of our service and not to put recyclable items into the general waste bin, by asking them to ‘stop and think’. This is a reminder only and is not as a result of any change to the service we provide.
In Cannock Chase we collected approximately 8,600 tonnes of dry recycling (blue bin) against 19,500 tonnes of general waste (green bin) at the kerbside in 2017/18. By encouraging residents to ‘stop and think’ we hope to increase our dry recycling rates and ensure the right waste goes into the right bin.
This campaign follows the successful contamination campaign, which ran in autumn 2016, and targeted residents who put general waste in the blue bin and contaminated the dry recycling.
Councillor John Preece, Portfolio Leader for the Environment said “Recycling can be confusing, these guides are not only informative but also give residents a nudge if they are about to put something in the green bin that could have been recycled.
“We are asking residents to put non-recyclable, bagged and food waste, into their green bin not their blue bin. Although not shown, any waste in the green bin can be bagged and the items shown in the bagged waste icon are there for demonstration purposes only.
As the weather continues to improve we would also encourage the residents of Cannock Chase to get out in the garden. Our garden waste recycling figures are lower than we would like them to be, this has been mainly due to the continuing bad weather at the beginning of the year. But as we head into the summer months it’s a great opportunity to get out in the garden and fill their brown bin.”
