Cannock Chase Council is encouraging residents to make the most of their freezer this Christmas and follow the Food Standards Agency (FSA) Freezer Fairy campaign’s tips and advice to have a less wasteful Christmas.

Christmas can be a stressful and busy time, whilst 43% of people feel that buying presents is their main worry, cooking Christmas dinner ranks a close second.

This time of year the volume of food being prepared is increased as many people are catering for large groups of friends and family.

The FSA’s campaign focuses on informing people on how to use their freezer effectively to help reduce food waste by changing behaviour and thinking about what foods can be frozen instead of thrown in the bin.

Each year in the UK we throw away over seven million tonnes of food and drink from our homes, most of which could have been eaten.  This wasted food is costing the average household up to £470 a year.

The ‘FSA Freezer Fairy’ is asking people to prepare in advance and reduce food waste from leftovers by using your freezer like a pause button, it’s safe to freeze food up to the ‘use by’ date on the packaging.

Councillor Muriel Davis, Portfolio Leader for Health and Wellbeing said “Cooking for more people than normal can mean having to handle different defrosting and cooking times for food.  Making sure that large amounts of food are stored safely reduces unnecessary waste.

We are supporting the FSA’s Freezer Fairy’s campaign and will be sharing their tips and advice on our social media accounts.  So why not like our Facebook page ‘Cannock Chase Life’ or follow us on twitter ‘@cannockchasedc’ for interesting and helpful tips and advice this Christmas.”
