Cannock Chase Council is offering free glow-in-the-dark ‘No Trick or Treat’ window cards to help reassure residents during Halloween.
While Halloween is often enjoyed as light-hearted fun, unexpected visits from trick-or-treaters can cause distress for some members of our community, particularly the elderly and vulnerable.
To support those who prefer not to take part, the Council will have A6-sized cards available for collection at Council offices starting from Monday 13 October. Residents can display these cards in their windows if they do not wish to be disturbed by trick or treaters.
Councillor David Williams, Deputy Leader and Portfolio Leader for Community Wellbeing, said: "Halloween can be great fun for many families, but we recognise it's not for everyone. For some of our elderly and vulnerable residents, unexpected knocks at the door on dark evenings can cause real anxiety.
"These simple cards give residents a respectful way to opt out whilst reminding young people and parents that what seems like harmless fun to them might feel very different to others. We're asking parents to supervise their children closely and respect these clear signals - that's how we build safer, more considerate neighbourhoods for everyone."
These cards have been purchased through funding allocated from the Staffordshire Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner’s Community Safety Fund.
Staffordshire Commissioner for Police, Fire & Rescue and Crime, Ben Adams, said: “Halloween is a fun time for a lot of people but it is not as enjoyable for others. I am pleased that the Commissioner’s Community Safety Fund has been used by Cannock Chase District Council to help ensure elderly and vulnerable residents feel safe in their homes.”
