Cannock Chase Council opened its Chamber to the School Council from Chancel Primary School in Rugeley this month.
Pupils aged between 8 and 11 were welcomed by the Council’s Chairman, Councillor Zaphne Stretton and learnt about the work the Council does and its political structure. They took part in an environmental awareness session delivered by the Council’s Environmental Protection team and learnt about the importance of disposing of litter properly.
Pupils were also given the opportunity to ask the Leader and Portfolio Leaders for Health and Wellbeing; Housing; Town Centre Regeneration; Economic Development & Planning; Corporate Improvement; Environment and Culture and Sport some questions after learning what each role entailed. Cabinet members were then put through their paces by the children with a lengthy debate about local issues affecting them.
Councillor George Adamson, Leader of the Council said: “It was a pleasure to welcome the children to the Council and I hope they gained an understanding about what the Council does and the role it plays within their local communities”.
Erin Harvey, Chair of Chancel`s School Council, said: “This was a wonderful experience for our school council and onethat we hope to repeat again.”
