This week saw the 5’s Pavilion and Sports Ground on Bradbury Lane officially opened by Council officials, with special guest Steve Bull MBE.

The state of the art facility features a floodlit full size 3G synthetic pitch which is suitable for 5-11 a-side teams.

In February 2015 Cannock Chase Council were awarded £390,039 of National Lottery funding from Sports England towards this scheme.  In addition £995,000 of funding was provided through the joint investment programme between Cannock Chase Council and Staffordshire County Council.

The derelict land on Bradbury Lane was purchased by Cannock Chase Council in June 2015.  The land and former West Cannock Fives pavilion had been dis-used since 2008 and was a hub for anti-social behaviour.  The old pavilion was demolished and a new purpose built facility has been put in its place.

The facility has taken almost five months to complete and in addition to the artificial turf pitch also features a pavilion with dedicated changing and shower facilities and a function room with a fully licenced bar.

Councillor Christine Mitchell said “This is a fantastic facility to have in our District and I am delighted to open it today.  We have had many talented football players come from our District and I hope this facility will create a few more.”

The ribbon to the new turf pitch was cut by Councillor Christine Mitchell, Portfolio Leader for Culture and Sport with a little help from former professional footballer Steve Bull MBE, who played for Wolverhampton Wanderers for 13 years and holds the clubs goal scoring record scoring 306 goals.
