To help prevent purse thefts across the district purse charms have been made available for residents in the district this winter.
Funded by the Office of the Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner, via the Locality Deal Fund, the purse charms are designed to alert you if someone attempts to steal your purse or wallet. Known as "purse dipping," this type of theft often occurs in busy areas such as town centres, shops, and public spaces.
Simple yet effective, the purse charms can be clipped to the zip of a purse or wallet. If someone tries to access your handbag, the twin bells will jingle, drawing your attention to the attempted theft.
The charms are now available for residents to collect from the Civic Centre in Cannock, as well as Cannock and Rugeley Police Stations. Local Policing Team officers will also distribute the charms during their patrols.
Councillor David Williams, Portfolio Leader for Community Wellbeing, said: “The purse charm initiative has been hugely successful in the past, with stock being quickly taken up. With more people shopping in the lead-up to Christmas, these charms provide a simple yet effective way to keep your purse or wallet safe.”
Staffordshire Commissioner for Police, Fire & Rescue and Crime Ben Adams said: “Having your purse or wallet stolen can be really upsetting, especially during the festive period.
“Purse charms are a really effective way of protecting your personal belongings and alerting others to thieves in the area.
“Make sure to ask a police officer for one if you see them out and about in Cannock or Rugeley.”
