Rugeley’s popular Elmore Park is a step closer to seeing work start to install a replacement toilet block, with the Council set to undertake a tender process to provide the new facility and appoint a suitable contractor to undertake the works.
As residents will be aware, the current public toilets in the park are in a poor condition with no running water for washing hands, no baby changing facilities and are unsuitable for less mobile users. While a small retail kiosk, next to the block, is unoccupied and is currently boarded up after proving difficult to let.
With the current toilet block not compliant with current standards, the Council has decided that action needs to be taken. Funding has therefore been found to replace the existing toilet block with a fabricated steel frame building, clad with brick and topped with a pitched tiled roof.
When completed later this year there will be two unisex toilets provided with one accessible.
Councillor Robert Hughes, Portfolio Holder for Innovation and Resources said: “The park is close to the town centre and bus station, and its wildlife haven is popular with families and other visitors. We know it is well used, so it is really important that the visitor experience is a positive one overall, which for too long now has not been the case.
“I am therefore pleased that we have been able to find sufficient resources to demolish the current toilet block and replace it with a new facility to meet our aspiration of providing a good park experience in Rugeley town - something we successfully achieve in our other Green Flag award winning parks across the District.”
