Council’s Cabinet have approved to spend £22,000 from its CCTV Capital Programme to upgrade the current CCTV transmission system in Rugeley Town Centre. This project will convert the existing BT transmission to a more advanced wireless solution, enhancing public safety and reducing costs.
The decision, approved by the Council’s Cabinet, will involve the decommissioning of 13 BT circuits and the installation of a wireless transmission system for 16 CCTV cameras in Rugeley Town Centre. This upgrade is expected to deliver substantial cost savings, with an estimated annual saving of £12,526.09 based on current rates. As BT plans to increase its circuitry costs by 100% starting in April 2025, these savings are set to rise to £25,052.18 annually.
The upgrade to wireless transmission not only offers financial savings but also ensures the long-term sustainability and efficiency of the town’s CCTV network.
The CCTV system managed by the Council plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety and well-being of the local community. The district’s CCTV network consists of 98 cameras, these cameras operate 24/7, providing critical support in reducing crime, anti-social behaviour, and safeguarding vulnerable members of the community.
The wireless upgrade follows successful conversions in Cannock Town Centre and Chadsmoor, where similar upgrades have saved the Council over £26,000 annually. These savings are expected to double with the upcoming BT cost increases.
With the approval of the £22,000 expenditure, a procurement process will begin, and the work is expected to be completed before April 2025.
Councillor David Williams, Portfolio Leader for Health and Wellbeing said “This is a win win situation, the conversion will mean we have more reliable technology at a reduced rate. The council is dedicated to ensuring that its CCTV network continues to support community safety while providing cost-efficient and technologically advanced solutions.”
