Sustainability and Climate Change

Climate Change logo

Our Corporate Plan sets out our vision to be an effective Council that promotes a growing economy, strong, healthy communities and a sustainable environment. Climate Change, Nature Recovery and the Environment is one of our four priorities and we are committed to enhancing the environment by reducing its carbon footprint.

Our Vision is to create a green, healthy and resilient area where people and nature can thrive, by limiting the impacts of Climate Change and meeting our Climate Change and green recovery commitments. Key steps include the implementation of our new Climate Change Strategy, promoting biodiversity, supporting nature recovery work, and improvements in parks and open spaces.

Our Climate Change Strategy is centred around the following key objectives:

  • reduce greenhouse gas emissions
  • engage and educate the community
  • collaboration and partnerships
  • monitoring and reporting

We have selected these five pillars of focus as they allow our action to have the most meaningful impact:
1.    Corporate Assets and Housing
2.    Transport and Waste
3.    Community Engagement
4.    Business Engagement
5.    Sustainability Education

We have also conducted our annual comprehensive Carbon Audit.

The 2024/25 carbon audit provides an in-depth analysis of our carbon footprint, measured across Scopes 1, 2, and 3 emissions, in line with DEFRA 2025 carbon conversion factors and Local Government Association (LGA) guidelines. This report reflects our continued commitment to reducing our environmental impact and working toward our Net Zero Carbon goal by 2035.
