Reduce your waste

Here are some tips to help you reduce your waste at home.

Food Waste:

There are many ways to reduce food waste.

  • Plan: Planning is the key to reducing food waste, and will help you save time, money and eat more healthily. Follow the link for help with planning - Love Food Hate Waste.
  • Cooking: It’s easy to prepare too much food. Portion planning and being savvy with your leftovers can make a huge difference in helping you to waste less food. It will also give you more room in your household waste bin. Check out this article for guidelines on portioning for children.
  • Storage: There is a lot more to storage than just a neat looking kitchen. Storing food in the right way extends the life of your food, and helps you to stay on top of what you have got: A to Z of Food Storage.
  • Food Rescue: Despite the best intentions, there will still be times when we will struggle to use up food before it’s past its best. Rescue your leftovers with some handy ideas: Make the Most of your Leftovers. 
  • Disposal: There will always be odds and ends that can’t be used such as coffee grounds, banana skins and tea bags. These items are still useful so put them in your food caddy so they can go to create electricity and heat for the National Grid as well as bio-fertiliser for local farms.

Electrical Waste:

  • We offer a kerbside recycling service. Put your small electrical item(s) in a carrier bag, tie up the bag and place it next to your waste or recycling bin on your normal collection day. Find out more here.

  • Staffordshire County Council encourage residents to Recycle old / broken IT equipment at the Recycling Centres they then aim to repair old items and donate them to charity. Find out more here.

Textiles and clothes:

  • Sell or donate your unwanted textiles and clothes to charity instead of throwing them away. Follow the link to find out where you can take unwanted textiles to be recycled and reused.
